The Imperial Coinage of the Early Antonines:
Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius Caesar

Second Revised Edition

Since commencing this Antonine coinage project nearly ten year ago, I have learnt so much about Roman coinage, and its cataloguers.  I have been frustrated by following some faulty sources, and have learnt the value of tracing the original source of a citation, having seen erroneous descriptions of coins repeated from generation to generation, without comment, by scholars who should know better.  The foundation of this catalogue is the collection of the British Museum and its publication in the BMCRE.  Usually, if a coin type is recorded in BMCRE then I have not recorded other examples.  However, if a particular coin is excessively rare, and the indication of additional noteworthy examples is of value, then I have added references to them.  Otherwise, I have tried to include references to at least two examples for each coin type.  References to museum specimens have been abbreviated (see table below), but citations of auctions sales have been made in the fullest possible form to assist in tracing the antecedents of specimens.

I have taken the opportunity to make some alterations to the format of this catalogue, and I hope that it will improve its readability and usefulness.  I have made what I hope are improvements to the referencing, particularly as regards Cohen / RSC.  Also, many of the more dubiously attested types, which crowded the lists of the previous edition, have been removed from the main lists and are now recorded only in the notes.

I hope that this work will find the approval of collectors and students of Roman numismatics, and I do hope that they will continue to contact me with additions and corrections (the latter undoubtedly a necessity).
