When Septimius Severus came to power in 193 A.D. he was self-conscious of his position, both as an outsider to the traditional aristocracy at Rome, he was a native of North Africa and married to a Syrian, and as a military leader who had gained Imperial power by virtue of his control of the legions of the East. Since the overthrow of Commodus, the last of the Antonine Emperors who had done so much to maintain stability over the Empire, Rome had undergone a brief but shocking period of civil war, where the throne of the world had appeared open to the highest bidder, or those with sufficient boldness, and the control of enough troops, to venture the gamble. Severus needed to offer something greater than these ‘rebels’; he needed to offer Rome a return to stability. With this in mind he bought a period of loyalty from the last of his rivals, Clodius Albinus, who made a bid for power from his base in Britain and Northern Gaul, by offering him a share in the Imperial power by making him Caesar to Severus’ Augustus. This gave Severus time to re-organise the Empire and to get his own hands more securely upon the machinery of Roman government.

In 196, Severus began to exploit one of the principal assets he possessed to ensure both the security of his own reign and the establishment of long-term Severan rule, his Family. Like Vespasian, the founder of the Flavian dynasty more than a century earlier, he had two healthy sons who could be educated in ruling and raised through the ranks to provide a guaranteed succession, the sine qua non of dynastic ambition.

Severus’ first move in this dynastic programme was the promotion to Caesar of his eldest son Antoninus, known as Caracalla from the hooded Gallic cloak he liked to wear and introduced to Rome. This move spelled the end of Clodius Albinus’s chances of succession; there was no way that he could compete with a ‘Prince of the Blood’. So, in desperation he declared himself emperor, but Severus’ control was now not to be defied, and at the beginning of 197 he marched the legions westward and Albinus was defeated and killed.

The promotion of Caracalla was celebrated with the issue of a gold aureus whose reverse advertises the young man’s position as the son of Severus. As we shall see below, the use of portraits as reverse types on Roman coins was not a new phenomenon, but the intensity of their usage and the high-level of artistic skill with which the Severan family depicted themselves and their unity makes these coins particularly attractive and valued today. These issues began, as we have said, with the raising of Caracalla to Caesar, and largely ended in 202, at the time of his marriage to Plautilla, by which event Severus no doubt hoped to secure the dynasty for a further generation.

The dynastic portrait coins were not issued in isolation, but formed a part of an ongoing, systematic and detailed representation of the Imperial family as reverse types in many differing scenes and situations. The full extent of the dynastic representation of the Severan dynasty on coins would fully justify an extensive study on its own. But, the beautiful portraits on both obverse and reverse, seen singly, in pairs, or even in threes, make these coins a high point in late-second and early-third century Roman numismatic art.

The dynastic portrait coins were struck in gold and silver only. The vast majority were minted at Rome, though a few types were struck at an uncertain Eastern mint traditionally identified as Laodicea ad Mare in Syria, though a recent challenge has been made to attribute these pieces to Antioch on the Orontes, also in Syria.

— Historical Development —

Brutus and Ahala
1. Brutus, 54 B.C.
The use of a portrait head as both obverse and reverse types has few precedents from the Republican period. The lack of contemporary portraiture on coins until the age of Caesar meant such images could only be ancestor portraits or depictions of gods, and thus have a purely symbolic value. Marcus Junius Brutus, the later tyrannicide, advertised his own adherence to 'free' Republican politics with portraits of Brutus, his ancestor and the man who freed the republic from the monarchy, and Ahala, another hero of Early Republican history (1). Meanwhile, his fellow moneyer, Quintus Pomponius Rufus, displayed images of two of his grandfathers (2).

It is in the Triumviral period that the portrait-reverse type fully came into its own. It had a unique power to illustrate the alliances between the contending powers and provided a striking commentary on the current political scene. Octavian utilised this type to show his adoption by the late Dictator (3), and it was as the new Gaius Julius Caesar that he laid claim the leadership of the Caesarian faction. The formation of the Second Triumvirate was illustrated by coins issued by each of the triumvirs with the images and titles of their partners/rivals on the reverse (4, 5). Sextus Pompey combined the titles granted as the champion of the remnants of the Senatorial faction with a dynastic reverse showing portraits of Julius Caesar's great rival, Pompey the Great, and his older brother Gnaeus (6).

Mark Antony was bolder in the design of his coinage than the conservative Octavian, and his reverses include types that bespeak his rivalry with Caesar's heir. At the time of the Triumvirate he issues a coin depicting his youngest brother Lucius Antony (7) who supported his brother's campaigns and fought against Octavian in Northern Italy. The second type shows Antony's son by Fulvia (8), whom Antony, no doubt, intended to succeed to his power. These types could also portray defiance of Roman conventions and notify citizens of a major shift in political alliances. We can only guess at the shock that would have been felt at Rome on seeing their leading general, Mark Antony, sharing coinage with a foreign queen (9), but it provided a propaganda opportunity which his then rival, Octavian, exploited to the full.

Augustus with Julia, Gaius and Lucius
11. Augustus, 13 B.C.
Augustus, as Octavian became as the victor in the Civil Wars and Rome's first emperor, was sensitive to, and restrictive of, the messages his coinage sent out. He restricted portraiture to his adoptive father, the deified Julius Caesar, and members of his close family. He shared coin with Marcus Agrippa (10), the general who won the empire for him, his daughter Julia, who bore the young Caesars, Gaius and Lucius (11), and, finally, with Tiberius (12); on each case the association with the Emperor indicates the other's position as heir (or heirs)-apparent.

The only dual-portrait coins that Tiberius issued were in honour of the deified Augustus. Caligula followed suit, and virtually all subsequent emperors struck coins honouring Augustus, the founder if the Imperial system. Caligula also took the opportunity to honour his late parents, Germanicus (13) and Agrippina the Elder (14).

Claudius and Agrippina the Younger
15. Claudius, 51 A.D.
Claudius is recorded as falling under the domination of his wives, and it is therefore no surprise that the two portrait-reverse types that he issued showed his fourth wife, Agrippina the Younger (15), and her son by a previous marriage, Nero (16), for whom Claudius passed over his own son in the succession. Claudius and Nero
16. Claudius, 51 A.D.
Nero and Agrippina the Younger
17. Nero, 58-9 A.D.
Upon his accession, Agrippina sought to continue her domination and exercise power over her young son, and it is no surprise that among the earliest issues of Nero's reign are ones bearing dual portraits of the new emperor and his mother (17). Agrippina's ascension did not last; longer lasting was Nero's respect for his deified, adopted father, Claudius (18). Nero and Divus Claudius
18. Nero, 58-9 A.D.
Vitellius and Lucius Vitellius
19. Vitellius, 69 A.D.
Of the contestants in the Civil War of 68-69 A.D. only Vitellius availed himself of portrait-reverse coinage. The would-be founder of a dynasty issued coins honouring his late father (19), whose distinguished career undoubtedly paved the way for his sons rise to power. He also issued coins with reverses advertising his son and daughter through whom, he evidently hoped, his line would be perpetuated. Vitellius and his Children
20. Vitellius, 69 A.D.
Vespasian and Titus
21. Vespasian, 69 A.D.
Vespasian rose to power through his absolute control of the Eastern legions, and on his accession, his son Titus remained in the East to finish the conquest of Judaea. Coins were issued in the East with portraits of the new Emperor and his eldest son (21), clearly underlining Titus' status in the new order. Elsewhere, coins were issued, in clear imitation of Vitellius' dynastic coins, with reverses with busts of both Titus and his younger brother Domitian (22).  Vespasian, Titus and Domitian
22. Vespasian, 69 A.D.
Domitian and Domitia
23. Domitian, 82-3 A.D.
Titus during his brief reign issued no dual-portrait coins. However, Domitian had longer to develop the dynastic content of his coinage, issuing coins that paired his portrait with that that of his wife, Domitia (23). He also minted coins that honoured his late parents, Vespasian and Domitilla (24), and coins that paired the image of Titus with that of Titus' daughter Julia, with who Domitian was believed to have carried on an affair (25). The emperor Trajan used this type of coin to honour his deified parents, both his natural father, and his adopted parent, the aged former emperor Nerva (26, 27). Trajan and Trajan Pater

27. Trajan, 115 A.D.
His successor, Hadrian, continued the use of the portrait reverse, but although he issued coinage for his wife, Sabina, and had her deified, he did not share coins with her during his lifetime. Instead, he concentrated his dual-portrait coins on the family of Trajan, through whom he came to power. He shared coins with images of Trajan (28, 30), his mother-in-law, Matidia (31), and especially the empress, Plotina (29, 30, 31), to whom he was chiefly indebted for his elevation. Hadrian's successor, Antoninus Pius, began his reign with a special issue honouring Hadrian and his deified parents, Trajan and Plotina (32, 33), as a part of his campaign to have his predecessor deified by a reluctant Senate. But the main dual-portrait coinages of his reign were those he shared with Marcus Aurelius Caesar, his designated successor (34). Hadrian, Trajan and Plotina

Strangely, dual-portrait coins were never issued at Rome for the joint-emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, but were only struck as provincial issues. However, Aurelius did issues coins with reverses showing his son Commodus (35); obviously indicating the young man's position as the heir-apparent, and marking a return to the hereditary principle for the succession. Commodus himself issued no dual-portrait coinage of his own, not did any of the rivals in the civil war which followed the assassination of Commodus until the accession of Septimius Severus.
